What is the United Nations Security Council?
How many members does it have?
What is it’s job in the world?
The United Nations Security Council gets a lot of press. It is because it is the body of the United Nations that is responsible for keeping the world safe and secure, and making sure that nations great and small play by the rules and do not go to war.
The council has fiver permanent members. They are the United States, Great Britain, Russian Federation, People’s Republic of China, and France. These members do not change. They also have the power to veto any action proposed to be taken by the council.
Ten other nations are non-permanent members. They are elected by the General Assembly to a two-year term on the council.
The council’s mission is so critical to the world that members must maintain a representative at the Headquarters of the United Nations at all times.
